The work

Gutters only work if they are sized right and hung with the correct pitch. A gutter that is too small for the roof area feeding into it will overflow during a heavy downpour, and one that is not pitched properly will hold standing water instead of moving it toward the downspouts. We measure the roof area and valley concentration before deciding on gutter size, since a roof with big valleys funneling water into one section needs a larger gutter and downspout there than a simple straight run.

Downspout placement matters just as much as the gutters themselves. Water needs to land somewhere that carries it away from the foundation, not somewhere it pools against the house. Greensboro's clay soil does not drain quickly, so water sitting near a foundation from a poorly placed downspout can lead to settling, damp crawlspaces, and cracked slabs over time.

We hang gutters with proper fasteners and check the fascia behind them, since old fascia boards can be soft from years of water exposure and need to be solid before new gutters go up. One piece aluminum gutters formed on site are what most homes here end up with, since they hold up well and have fewer joints to fail.

How it runs

Step by step, no surprises.

  1. Measure and size We measure roof area and valley points to determine the right gutter and downspout size.
  2. Fascia check We check the fascia boards behind the old gutters and replace any that have gone soft.
  3. Hang and pitch New gutters are hung with a consistent pitch toward the downspouts.
  4. Downspouts and extensions Downspouts are positioned and extended to carry water away from the foundation.
  5. Seal and test Seams and end caps are sealed and checked with water before we call it finished.
